Notes / History Crown House, now better known as Merton Civic Centre, was constructed in 1960 by the property development firm, Bernard Sunley & Sons. In 1960, a new purpose-build “Crown” pub was installed to the side of the tower-block, on formerly occupied by the Village Club. The 1932 mock Tudor style pub was now demolished and replaced by a triangular structure housing Caters supermarket. This site is now more familiar as the forecourt and library extension, build during the 1990s.
A double celebration was held on Wednesday 2nd August 1961 for the Opening of the New Crown Public House and the completion of major structural work on the 15th storey of the new building on the Crown site. Amongst these pictures enjoying a toast to the success of the new bar are: Left to right – Bernard Sunley; the head of the Courage brewery and Miss Watts, Mayoress of Merton & Morden.
