Notes / History The Knight of the Burning Pestle was a play put on by the staff of the Wimbledon County School for Girls in 1931, in order to raise funds for a gymnasium. Thanks in part to the £60 the play brought in, the school was able to build a gymnasium by 1933.
The play was a comedy written in the 17th century, and was inspired in part by the works of Don Quixote. It satirised the popular taste for melodrama and the custom of allowing members of the audience to criticise the actors during the play, and included characters like Jaspar Merrythought and Luce Venturewell.
