| Notes / History | This natural spring has supplied local residents with water for centuries. The picture is pointing in a South Easterly direction, and shows the carved granite blocks that were laid in 1872. Despite the name, Julius Caesar almost certainly never visited Wimbledon. Caesar’s route is more likely to have moved towards London from further East. Most likely taking them across the Thames at Westminster. The Roman general’s name seems to have first been associated with the site by a map-seller around 1824. Prior to this the site had been given a variety of names by locals. The true origin of the site is likely to be Neolithic (c. 2300BCE); or Celtic (c. 600BCE). |
