Notes / History Sir Arthur Holland was a twin and was privately educated at Trinity College and became the second Mayor of Wimbledon in 1906 after time spent as the first chairman of the Urban District council in 1894.

Sir Holland helped to start the Guild of Social Welfare and to get the streets to be lit by electricity rather than by oil lamps.
He was also the president of the Wimbledon Football Club.

In 1904, Sir Holland maimed his hand for life after trying to save the life of a maid in his house after her dress caught alight from the fire she was setting. His act of bravery sadly did not save her life, but nevertheless he was remembered for the act of bravery.

He died on Sunday 7th January 1928 on the year of his 86th birthday. He is commemorated by Holland Gardens which were opened by his widow in 1929.
