Notes / History Convalescent troops pictured during an outing to Wimbledon Common, c1916.

There were a number of military hospitals tending to the needs of convalescent soldiers during the Great War. Large properties such as Morden Hall and the Holborn Union Workhouse in Mitcham were converted for this purpose.

In the Wimbledon area, the Cottage Hospital and Nelson Hospital on Kingston Road, treated thousands of sick and wounded returning form the western front.
