| Notes / History | This aerial view of Pollards Hill housing estate is undated but evidently pre-dates the large postwar development of this area which commenced in 1950. To address the acute housing shortage after the Second World War, the local Council embarked on an intensive building programme in 1950 to provide a large and heavily subsidised housing estate. The new housing estate was completed in 1956 and included six-storey maisonettes. Using compulsory purchase powers, the Borough Council acquired further land for the new development. Existing prefabricated bungalows and many houses built prior to the post war development of Pollards Hill would eventually be replaced by permanent houses and flats. |
