| Notes / History | This picture shows Grove Mill (left) and what become known as the fisherers cottages. Crown Mill (centre) was behind the cottages. Prior to becoming part of Mitcham Hair and Fibre Mills, the Crown Mill building was occupied by Mitcham Felt and Flock Works. With wheels powered by the River Wandle, the factory produced high quality felt for use in pianos, harness padding and hats. It is also said to have made felt boots and jerkins for British soldiers serving in the Crimean War. Also shown in the centre are the Mill Cottages at Mitcham Bridge now more commonly referred to as the Fisheries Cottages. They are three buildings located at 475-479 London Road, Mitcham. The double-fronted house (475) was built shortly after 1851. The other two cottages are older and recorded in the Mitcham Poor Rate Book of 1755. |
