| Notes / History | This picture was taken in one of the houses on the St. Helier Estate, Morden in 1973. By this stage, the television set was starting to replace the radio as the focus of attention within the average living room. From the 1960s onwards, programmes such as “65 Special”, “5-4-3-2-1”, “The Old Grey Whistle Test” and “Top of the Pops” were granting the public even greater access to a whole range of popular music. Televised concerts, including opera and the “Last Night of the Proms” were also helping to broaden the appeal of classical music. |
