Notes / History During the 50's and 60's Mitcham Council organised an ambitious post-war building programme of slum clearance and property development, including the construction of housing estates and high-rise accommodation. The Phipps Bridge Estate was considered a model development combining a mixture of flats, small houses and modern high rise centrally heated accommodation in landscaped grounds. The development provided laundry facilities, shops and playgrounds. Shown in the forefront of the photograph is one of the laundry blocks.

In recent years the high rise blocks were subject to crime and vandalism and local people supported the decision to demolish some of the Phipps Bridge high rise blocks and replace them with lower level housing.
