| Notes / History | During the Napoleonic war, fears of a French invasion led to the formation of local militia and volunteer forces to defend the country against attack. Such organisations were often supported by the local gentry, for instance, Earl Spencer became a cavalry officer and offered the use of Wimbledon Common for training purposes. As a further defence measure, signalling devices were erected on high ground. This picture shows the northern section of Wimbledon Common, including the obelisk situated near Kingston Road and West Hill. The mast-like structure, picture left, was used to send coded messages. |
