Notes / History The 1950s witnessed a number of public protests against a decision by Mitcham and Croydon Borough Councils to use certain areas on Mitcham Common for the disposal of household waste.

Always a bone of contention, this practice led to a further outcry during the early '60's, when it was suggested that the former gunsite could also be used.

Following enquiries by the Mitcham Common Preservation Society, the local authorities were forced to back down and tipping became the responsibility of an outside contractor.
