Notes / History This picture shows the footpath near Caesar’s Camp, (the remains of an Iron Age compound) Wimbledon Common, 1911.

Today footpaths are vital to the preservation of local Commons and the associated plant and wildlife. During periods of fine weather, Wimbledon Common may play host to over 10,000 people per day.

To avoid the trampling of valuable habitat, the Commons Conservators have designated footpaths, cycle tracks and horse-rides. These encourage visitors to stick to certain areas of the Common, without seriously limiting their access to open spaces.
