Notes / History During the period when England was at war with France, 1790s, fear of an invasion led to the formation of Volunteer forces. In Wimbledon two were raised; a regiment of infantry and a squadron of cavalry.

The NRA used the camp for its annual meetings and Hansard records in 1888 a question being asked in Parliament about the removal of the camp and suggesting it might be moved to Richmond. This was thought to be impractical as there were too many trees for clear sight lines.
