| Notes / History | Robert Clive owned a house called Mitcham Grove. At the age of eighteen he was sent to India as a clerk for the East India Company, and later joined the Company’s military force as a junior officer. He was promoted to General and defeated the French at Arcot and later at Plassey. He was made Governor of Bengal but made many enemies. In 1773 he returned to England to face trial for alleged corruption but was successfully cleared. He was made 1st Baron Clive of Plassey and was also known as Clive of India. He committed suicide at the age of 59 whilst suffering from depression. |
