Notes / History The advancement of an efficient refuse collection and disposal service took place during the two world wars. The tall red brick chimney was part of the refuse destructor at the Council's Homewood Road depot. It dominated the area for 30 years. Known locally as 'The Dust' it was entered via large wooden gates where there was a weighbridge and offices. The system used by the destructor was found unsuitable by post-WW2 standards and its use was stopped. This lead to Mitcham Common being used for the controlled tripping of waste. A cheap alternative to transporting waste further afield.
