Notes / History The Doctor in this photo appears to be checking the boy’s X-ray possibly for the presence of dark patches on the lungs indicative of TB. Mass X-ray programmes were organised during the 1950s to screen patients for tuberculosis.

Before the creation of the National Health Service, patients were admitted by appointment and via recommendation from other hospitals and Casualty departments.
