Notes / History This photograph of Watermeads at Mitcham was taken by Tom Francis, a respected local photographer. Comparison with other photographs in the Tom Francis collection strongly suggest that this is the Paper Mill Cut in Watermeads.

The cut was known to exist in the mid 1820s but may have been constructed ten years earlier. It led to the paper mill owned by Richard Glover under an 85 year lease which commenced at Midsummer 1778.

The paper mill itself fell out of use by 1834. The building has long since disappeared, although traces of the ‘mill race’ can still be seen.
