Notes / History This photograph of the Wandle at Watermeads upstream of Mitcham Bridge is undated. However, it is likely to have been taken in the late 1940s. It was donated to the collection by
E.P. Olney and was one of a number of photographs of Watermeads that he presented around this time.

Watermeads had by this time been in the care of the National Trust for over 30 years. Initially the Trust’s policy (was) very much one of laissez-faire. During the 1940s, however, many new trees and shrubs were introduced into the environment. It is now managed as a nature reserve.
