Notes / History The National Rifle Association (NRA) was set up in 1859 to promote rifle shooting. Two different rifle brigades had committees looking into the possibility of setting up a National Association and after they had joined together it was suggested Wimbledon would be a suitable venue.

Earl Spencer was not only on the committee but also Lord of the Manor of Wimbledon. Spencer then became the president of the NRA. Lord Elcho, Earl of Weymms, was also on the committee coming from the original committee set up by the London Rifle Brigade.
