Notes / History Judging by the quantity of foliage present, this picture was probably taken during the Christmas period.

The Victorians continued the longstanding tradition of decorating churches and homes with evergreens at Christmas.

It was considered unlucky to bring greenery indoors before Christmas Eve. Once in place the decorations were left untouched until Twelfth Night ( January 5th. ) To avoid bad luck, care had to be taken not to miss a single leaf when removing the decorations.
