Notes / History Also known as Willow Lane Bridge.

From a painting by J.F.Dixon.

The bridge goes over the railway. Mitcham Junction is to the left and the line splits just before the bridge and one branch heads towards Wimbledon, the other, nearer, heads towards Streatham.

A Romany or Showmen's wagon travelling over the Double Bridges, Mitcham Common. A life on the open road was not an aimless existence. Most gypsies travelled a regular circuit around the country. In this way, they identified sources of employment, suitable stopping places, water supplies and friendly landowners. They also learned to avoid sites where the people were less tolerant and more likely to move them on (often violently).
