Notes / History The Camp on Wimbledon Common was used as a training base for the first recruits to Kitchener’s Army. Further waves of troops arrived following the introduction of conscription.

It is possible that the recruits included black and Asian soldiers, as wounded colonial soldiers are known to have recuperated in the locality.

An ideal training base, the Camp benefited from varied terrain, mock trenches and a bayoneting ground. The recruits would practice their combat skills before departure for the Front.
