| Notes / History | Alfred Mizen stated in 1934 that he first arrived in Mitcham in 1866 as the youngest of five children. His father, Edward, had chosen a site in Grove Road near to Eastfields level crossing. The family's first home was known as 'Elm Cottage' and their successful market gardening business was established between 1866 and 1868. Mizen Bros.Elm Nursery was bordered by London Road, St Marks Road and Feltham Road. As the business grew, so did the workforce and a number of terraced homes and small cottages were built to accommodate the nursery staff. Although the market garden closed during the 1960s, members of the Mizen family were still living in the area until 1980. For more information a booklet 'The Mizens of Mitcham' by Gerald A.
