Shown is a limestone tablet which is located in the eastern boundary wall behind The Canons, Mitcham. It was placed there at the behest of Esther Maria Cranmer, daughter of James Cranmer II. She married Richard Dixon of the 85th Regiment of Foot in 1782. As a condition of her inheritance, Esther was then required by her father to retain the Cranmer surname. Widowed after a relatively short period, she later married William Simpson, who had business interests in a calico bleaching works at Merton Abbey. The stone shown here was erected in 1816 and originally faced the adjoining property to the east but was reversed by council and placed in its current position in the 1970s. |
