Notes / History | Perhaps as a ploy on the part of the postcard manufacture - this postcard was wrongly captioned as Nelson's House, Merton. Lord Nelson's former home, Merton Place, was actually demolished c.1823, long before this picture was taken. In fact this image from c.1900 shows the rear of Gate House, near Merton High Street. During the early 19th century, this was home to James Halfhide, owner of a calico printing works, situated to the rear of the house. It was later purchased by Charles Smith. His brother and fellow housemate, Rear Admiral Isaac Smith, travelled on board the Endeavour with Captain Cook and was the first Englishman to set foot on Australian soil. |
