Notes / History | Eagle House, Wimbledon, was built in 1617 (at a cost of £1,200) for Robert Bell, who amassed a personal fortune through his work with the East India Company. In 1599, he and his brother-in-law invested £200 and became founder members of the “Society for Adventurers for the Discovery of Trade for the East Indies”, later known as the East India Company. Robert served on its management committee for 30 years. Bell’s connection with the East India Company was finally severed in 1630, when he was caught smuggling 20 tuns of white wine on one of its ships bound for India. |
