Notes / History | Although snuff production at the mill ceased in 1922, much of the external workings remained in situ for several decades. One of the waterwheels was finally removed in 1968. The other was left in place, although the paddles were removed to prevent the accumulation of driftwood. The National Trust has converted the mill house into an Environmental Centre for use by local schools and community groups. The waterwheel has since been repaired and the paddles put back in place. However as the water levels of the River Wandle have fallen, the paddles no longer make contact with the river. |
