Notes / History | Mitcham Fair was one of the largest gatherings in the south-east - the August fair was both a social and a commercial event, combining stalls, sports and entertainment. Much of the activity within the village would come to a halt as people poured in from different parts of Surrey and the Capital. The fair was also an important event for Travellers who came to work, trade and meet up with friends and family. By the mid-nineteenth century there were at least 200 Gypsy tents and caravans parked on the common during the build up to the fair. Until 1923, Mitcham fair was traditionally held on the Upper Green. In this picture the clock tower can be seen in its original location, whilst the “Kings Arms” pub is just out of sight on the far right. |
