Notes / History | This picture shows two of the most popular fairground attractions; the “helter-skelter” or spiral slide, far right, and the “switchback”, picture centre. The latter was introduced during the 1880s and was the forerunner of the roller-coaster. It was designed to allow small trains, or individual cars, to run up and down over an undulating track set into a round base. |
