Notes / History | South Park Gardens is a much-loved and well-used park in Wimbledon. It was laid out in the late 1800s and opened in 1901. The gardens were laid out with shrubberies, paths, scattered trees, a drinking fountain and a bandstand. The beds were sumptuously planted with roses and bedding plants. By the 1990s, South Park Gardens had become increasingly neglected and subject to vandalism. The Friends of South Park Gardens was established in 2002, which since then has actively lobbied and raised funds for the maintenance and restoration of the gardens. A Heritage Lottery Fund grant was successfully applied for and South Park Gardens has now been restored to its former Victorian glory and re-opened in 2009. |
