Notes / History | A wealthy radical M.P. Burdett moved to Wimbledon in 1801.He lived at Wimbledon Villa, Southside for 11 years, during which time he lost the Westminster seat in the 1806 election. In 1807 he took part in a duel, in Coombe Wood, following a disagreement with fellow politician James Paull. Both men were wounded but both survived. In later life Burdett devoted himself to the cause of prison reform. |
