| Notes / History | Middleton was the son of local landowner Edward Rayne. Following his father's sudden death in 1847, he helped his mother to run their West Barnes estate. By 1857 he was a respected member of the Vestry and surveyor of the parish highways. In 1859 Middleton left Britain and began a successful career as a rail engineer in Madras and Allalhabad. |
