Notes / History | A church is thought to have occupied this site since the Anglo-Saxon period and was probably founded by the Archbishop of Canterbury, then lord of the manor. A stone building was erected during the reign of Edward l and dedicated to St. Mary. The church underwent radical alteration during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This was partly due to structural faults but also in order to accommodate separate pews for the wealthier village families. The current church is a Victorian structure, built around earlier remains. |
