Notes / History | This was the first Thai Temple to be built in Europe. It was designed by the Bangkok Fine Arts Department and adapted by architects Sidney Kay Firmin and Partners. Construction took 18 months and cost £590,000. Much of the work was conducted according to Thai ritual. Many of the fittings, including teak carvings and doors, were imported from Thailand. The building was opened in 1981. The temple complex includes a lay house, home to a small community of monks who minister to the needs of London’s Buddhist community. |
