Notes / History | To raise money to buy tanks, ships, aeroplanes and guns and munitions the Government sold Bonds to the general public. These Bonds could be redeemed later and yielded 5% interest for the buyer. People were encouraged to purchase the Bonds with displays of tanks and guns to foster the patriotic spirit. A large Field Howitzer, with its sand bagged emplacement and camouflage netting, was displayed outside the Council Offices in Wimbledon on Thursday October 10 1918. Unlike the Tank Day earlier in the year the crowd was small but close to £200,000 was raised. |
