Notes / History | The skin mill in the title is probably the Eagle Leather Works, the first of a number of leather works in this section of the Wandle. If this is correct then the sharp bend in the river would mark the border of an area called Bennett’s Hole which has now become a nature reserve. The donor of this photo claimed that “some of the skins are seen in the field in the process of preparation. The river here flows close to its London clay bank on the right but meanders in its alluvial plain to the left of the print” |
