| Notes / History | This photograph of Watermeads, upstream of Mitcham Bridge, was taken after it had become a National Trust property. Watermeads was purchased for the Trust in 1914 and in 1929 it was in the hands of a voluntary local committee which adopted a ‘laissez-faire’ management policy. In later years, after experimenting with a number of different approaches, the Trust has concentrated on planting tree species that are particularly suited to the wetland environment. The area is managed as a nature reserve and public access is restricted in order to protect its fragile eco-system. |
