| Notes / History | This is one of a group of 3 postcards showing the Watermeads area of the Wandle upstream of Mitcham Bridge in 1927. Purchased by the National Trust 14 years earlier, Watermeads had been left in the hands of a local committee “whose policy was very much one of laissez-faire in the belief that, in the main, nature was best left to care for itself.”* This policy was subsequently questioned but it is clear that – when the photos were taken –this hands-off approach provided a very pleasing naturalistic environment. *Mitcham Bridge, The Watermeads and the Wandle Mills: E.
