Notes / History | The waterwheel at Glovers Snuff Mill on the River Wandle. This mill was built in the early nineteenth century by Richard Glover, a miller and snuff manufacturer. It was on the Morden side of the river 25 yards above Mitcham Bridge. Snuff is made from ground tobacco leaves. The tobacco had to be dried in a kiln or oven before being ground. The mills on the fast flowing upper reaches of the Wandle were ideally suited to the grinding process. |
