Notes / History	Changes in wheel design and the invention of the safety bicycle in 1885 led to a cycling craze. From this point onwards, the roads and pathways across the local Commons were regularly used by cycle traffic. In more recent decades, parts of Mitcham Common have provided unofficial practice grounds for motorcyclists and BMX riders. This picture shows a cycle race in Mitcham area, c. 1906. Competitors had little in the way of special race attire, apart from long socks and cycle clips. The identity of the pub in the background is uncertain – however it may be the Surrey Arms on Morden Road, a hostelry which advertised teas and accommodation for touring cyclists during early 1900s.
