Notes / History | A unique image to commemorate sporting prowess. This charming postcard actually celebrates the victory of E.J. Callaghan, in the Surrey Cycle Challenge, 1919. Callaghan was a member of the Polytechnic Cycling Club . Surviving photographs show that the roads around Mitcham were often used for cycling races – an amazing variety of bicycles were developed during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, from Penny Farthings and Velocipedes, to Otto cycles, where the rider sat between two giant parallel wheels. |
