Notes / History | Mitcham can boast one of the oldest cricket grounds in the world. Cricket reached the peak of its popularity during the interwar era, when large crowds gathered to watch local, county and national matches. This game took place during one of the last summers of peacetime. Just two years later, many of the players shown here would be called up to fight in the Second World War, and a public air raid shelter was constructed on the green itself. This part of Mitcham become known as “bomb alley” due to the frequency of enemy attacks, many of which were targeted at Croydon aerodrome. |
