Notes / History | A warning notice at the junction of Hill Road and High Street. By this period, some of the wealthy households surrounding the village and the Common, were investing in cars for the first time. Motorised vehicles were still a rarity on local roads and inexperienced drivers had to be warned of impending hazards. This sign states "Caution Hill - Dangerous descent for vehicles and cycles unless brakes applied". The pointed structure to the left of the notice is the Toynbee memorial drinking fountain, which commemorates Joseph Toynbee, the famous ear, nose and throat specialist, who lived at Parkside. |
