Notes / History | This picture is thought to have been taken during the 1930s, but the properties shown date from the early 1900s. The electrification of the District Railway in 1905 prompted extensive development in the Wimbledon Park area. Local trade directories first refer to Marlborough Road in 1908. The road was renamed Stroud Road on 1 March 1954 in tribute to the late John Egerton Stroud, He was a prominent figure in Wimbledon Society, having been a schoolmaster at Holy Trinity school and Pelham School, Conservative councillor for Wimbledon Park ( 1945 - 52 ), Mayor of Wimbledon (1950) and Surrey County Councillor until his death in August 1953. Mr. Stroud was a keen football enthusiast. In addition to being a football referee, he was also Chairman of the Finance Committee at Wimbledon Football Club. |
