Notes / History | 'Spar' was just one of a growing number of small-scale supermarket chains to emerge during this period. Membership of this type of organisation gave the individual grocer more support and access to cheaper goods, thanks to the policy of bulk buying. Some of this was passed on to the customer through special offers and incentive schemes such as green shield stamps, which could be exchanged for free gifts. Much of this area was cleared during the early '60's to make way for the High Path housing development and this is now the site of May Court built in approximately 1967. |
