Notes / History | Lonesome was the name given to the area between Streatham Vale and Mitcham Common. During the Victorian era its rural nature, isolated from local housing, made it an ideal site for smelly and hazardous industries such as pig farming, chemical and firework production. Even during the 1920s and ‘30s much of this area was equipped with little more than dirt tracks. These turned into quagmires following heavy use and wet weather. It was common for both vehicles and pedestrians to get stuck in the thick rutted mud. |
