Notes / History | James Russell was initially a Chichester based cabinet maker, but when he found himself facing bankruptcy, his interest in photography proved a saving grace. He began working as a professional photographer in 1858, and was followed into the business by all his sons. It was his son, John Lemmon Russell, who opened a Wimbledon branch of the firm in 1884, at the corner of Worple Road. Here he produced a number of Royal portraits, even gaining a Royal Warrant in 1897, only to lose it several years later when publishing a picture of Prince George, Duke of York, and Princess Victoria Mary of Teck prior to the announcement of their engagement. |
