Notes / History In 1914, Wimbledon Hospital became one of the first medical institutions to offer its services to the Government for the treatment of war casualties. This was a great source of pride and inspiration to the local community. Initially only 20 beds were available, however the demand was ultimately so great that marquees were erected on adjoining land, raising patient numbers to 50. Most of the casualties had received serious wounds on the Western Front. It is a testament to the care and expertise of the medical staff, that of the 500 men treated between 1914 and 1918, only one died.
