Notes / History | Annie Collin (1852 – 1957), was a Wimbledon resident, who in 1906 founded the Friends of the Poor, a society raising funds to help the poor and needy. Annie’s work with the Society helped to finance a huge variety of projects, including various homes and pension funds. Annie also assisted the Disabled Soldiers Embroidery Industry, helping 611 men to earn a living through craft work. By the late 1950s, the “Friends” had handled 70,580 cases, distributing £564,402 in relief. Annie’s contribution was recognised on her 100th birthday, when she received flowers from the Queen and telegrams from Earl Mountbatten and the Duchess of Kent. Collin House (located on the Ridgeway, and pictured here c.1910), was a care home founded by the Friends of the Poor and is named in Annie’s honour. |
