Notes / History | This picture of Lyon Tower was taken in 1978. The tower itself was built in the mid-sixties but wasn’t occupied until 1967. It stands on the land which was originally between Brook Path, High Street, Colliers Wood and Christchurch Road. This was where The Wandle used to link, along with a small section of the Merton Priory Wall, to what was locally known as The Pickle Ditch. There were once watercress farms over this land but this ceased due to redevelopment caused by the increasing volume of traffic. Lyon Tower was acquired by Brown and Root Inc. when Ronald Lyon Estate Ltd went into receivership. |
